TILES and PLAQUES
The Celtic influence is all around us here in the Hebrides. People have lived here since Neolithic times, but around the year 1000AD many folk lived on these islands since the only way of getting about was on the sea. The little island of Iona - just off the west coast of Mull - is where St Columba first set up his monastery, and spread the Christian word to the north of Scotland (Alba as it was called then). These never ending patterns still turn up today on grave stones, churches, houses and in jewellery. These patterns represent the never ending cycle of life and death. |
